At one point, Maddie tells her therapist, “Growing up, I had many friends named Glory, Patience, Wisdom, Comfort. Maddie has been called “Maame,” – which is Twi, the language of Ghana, for “woman” – since she was a child, and the name is both a compliment and a curse. This is certainly the case for Maddie, the main character of Maame, a 25-year-old woman of Ghanaian descent living in London. This can be especially true among immigrant communities, where they’re scrutinized and policed even more closely while simultaneously having to navigate the hardships and complications of the immigrant experience. All too often, girls are forced to grow up too fast and mature before their time. ![]()
